2022: The Autumn Preview

We’re slowly creeping up to the end of the year, and it’s certainly been a surprising one! For the past few years the box office has been struggling due to the pandemic but this year we’ve already gotten two films breaking the $1 billion mark at the global box office with a few more to come, more than likely. This year we’ve had the huge success of Top Gun: Maverick, and Jurassic World: Dominion is just behind as the second biggest money-making film of the year, and then you have Marvel’s releases of their latest Doctor Strange and Thor films which have made a lot of money as well. Long story short, the cinema is back in business!

As mentioned in previous blogs success isn’t just measured in wealth but also in reviews. The critics have a say in what works and what doesn’t and we’ve had films such as Licorice Pizza, The Northman and Everything, Everywhere All at Once all prove that films don’t need to make a lot of money in order to be considered a hit! Just recently we’ve had Bullet Train and Nope released in cinema which didn’t take a lot of money but critics loved their cinematic appeal and storytelling skills. That’s all that has been released so far though, so let’s come back to the present.

October has historically been a big month for blockbuster releases. Last year we had No Time to Die, Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Dune all dominate the box office in October. This year, so far at least, we’ve had Halloween Kills and the new release of Black Adam to keep the box office booming. Halloween Kills is the final instalment in one of the longest-running horror franchises in history, and then Black Adam is a juggernaut of a Superhero film as we see someone with the powers of Superman but with the personality of a villain. Both films will more than likely be big successes in the coming weeks at the global box office.

Looking ahead then we have a mixture of releases, small and big, heading to the big screen. Disney has two major new releases next month with their new animated film Strange World hitting cinemas, and then there’s Marvel Studio’s latest film, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Strange World will be interesting to see as it is based on an original idea but currently animated films have been struggling to get an audience on the big screen. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, however, honours the legacy of Chadwick Boseman who we lost a few years back and brought the character of T’Challa to life on the big screen. Grief, loss and legacy are big themes the film will explore and I am sure audiences will travel out to witness this blockbuster in unison and grieve along with the characters at the loss of T’Challa.

It’s not just the blockbusters, there’s The Menu, She Said, Armageddon Time and Bones and All all coming to the big screen too. These films will be attracting film fans and critics as we slowly head towards the season of Award-Contending films. There is something for everyone, for couples, families and for film fans such as myself.

Cinemas are not struggling, they’re thriving and this autumn why not go out on a dark and cold night to your local warm cinema and enjoy the communal experience of getting lost in different worlds and different stories?
