2022: The Awards Season

Updated: May 8, 2022

There’s a sense of normality this year, especially after last year’s interesting awards season. At least the big award shows such as the BAFTA’s and Academy Awards went ahead, but they both had a certain amount of controversy in how they were handled. The difference this year is that the big venue’s will be back and it will have more of an atmosphere which was not felt last year. The Academy Awards in particular had extremely low viewing figures which put the awards show this year in the air, but luckily it is full steam ahead with a live host and a venue all booked and raring to go!

Last year we saw a diverse range of talented films such as Sound of Metal, Nomadland, The Father and Promising Young Woman all winning a range of well-deserved awards. Luckily most of those films had a showing of some kind on the big screen when cinema’s re-opened last May. This year with cinema’s thriving and streaming services still going strong, all bets are open as to which films could get nominated for the big shows.

Awards Season is already in full-swing with the behind-closed doors Golden Globes award show already been and gone. The winners and nominations of the Golden Globes has given us a sense of which films could be competing with each other come next month. With nominations for the BAFTA’s already announced let’s see which films are entering the award race this year;

  • The Power of the Dog

  • Dune

  • Belfast

  • West Side Story

  • Licorice Pizza

  • King Richard

  • Boiling Point

  • Nightmare Alley

There are many, many more which are highlighted this season but these few seem to be the films that have gotten a lot of attention as of recently, and also on the film festival circuit last year. There are a lot of omissions from the nominations, one of which is a personal favourite, Tick, Tick … Boom!. That film was a standout success with Andrew Garfield already winning a Golden Globe for the film, and sadly isn’t nominated for a single BAFTA, along with Kristen Stewart’s film Spencer, another fantastic film which came out last year.

Superhero films usually miss out on these awards shows with the odd exception or two such as Joker, The Dark Knight and Black Panther. However this year Marvel is attempting to push their latest releases with the likes of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Spider-Man: No Way Home and Eternals all up for award considerations. It will be interesting to see if any of these films will make it as far as the nominations stage for the Academy Awards.

It is still a little too early to talk about how this awards season will be different from previous years. You can expect plenty of surprises, plus there will be more emphasis on diversity as the industry continues to push forward. Don’t forget that not every film will be winner. So if your favourite film from the past year doesn’t win, or even get nominated, then don’t fret. It is only because there are too many great films for everyone to pick from.
