We are nearly at the end of September and slowly heading into October. Where has the year gone? Even though we have a few more months left until the end of the year I decided to draw up a “Best of …” list so far despite the fact that we have some very interesting films and big blockbuster titles still to come out. This won’t be a long list, only because I want to keep some of my favourite movies of 2022 under wraps until the last blog of the year, so instead, I will be going through the Top 3 films of 2022! Without further ado, here are my three favourite movies of 2022 so far …
3. CODA
The Best Picture winner at this year’s Academy Awards was rightly deserved! CODA is a deeply connective film as the young Ruby lives her life as a child of deaf adults (hence the acronym), and as a hearing-capable individual who also wants to live her life as a singer. She’s torn between two worlds, the hearing and the hearing-impaired. She’s devoted to her family but has a passion to sing. CODA does a brilliant job at displaying how difficult life is for her. The end result is a film that is as powerful as it is everlasting. It’s a film that stays with you even after the credits roll.
2. Nope
It’s been a while since we’ve had an original science-fiction film that truly delivers in spectacle and wonder. Star Wars, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Close Encounters of a Third Kind all had to start somewhere before they were revered as classics and that’s exactly what Nope feels like. Nope is a modern equivalent to an old-school Spielberg film by dealing with some heavy themes while showing something terrifying on a large scale. The sense of mystery draws us in and there are several bone-chilling moments in the film that truly gave me goosebumps. Nope has proven that original stories and ideas still have the power to wow and amaze as much as sequels and reboots do!
1. Top Gun: Maverick
The top film on everyone’s list this year is probably the same. Top Gun: Maverick is cinema at its purest and its finest. This is what cinemas were made for. The many delays were needed because without the experience of the big screen this film would not have worked as well as it did. From start to finish you are fully immersed within it, seeing everything from the pilot’s perspective. With very little visual effects and more emphasis on practical effects, you truly begin to believe what you’re witnessing and you get easily lost in the moment. Tom Cruise is a movie star and this film still proves that!
There’s been a lot of brilliant films this year, and I will create a heavier list in a few month's time, but these three films are arguably some of the best this year has to offer and I think it is safe to say that Top Gun: Maverick is the definitive film of 2022. Cinema is a place to be transported to and immerse yourself within the experience by taking you to worlds that rarely get seen in any other medium. The film is visual storytelling at its finest and I look forward to the many stories that 2022 has left to tell.
