The cold nights are slowly fading away and sunny days are becoming the norm again which means one thing, Spring is here! Spring-time also means that Easter is just around the corner as well. Even though people are more likely to be outside than inside, that doesn’t stop cinemas and streaming services from releasing some big high-profile blockbusters to keep us entertained. We have a very interesting Spring season for film fans this year, so let’s see what’s coming up on streaming first.
As I said, it’s a time for being outside in the sunshine and the big streaming service providers know this and as a result, there aren’t many big releases coming in the next few months. We do have some films to provide entertainment on a rainy night, however. Although saying that, Apple TV+ is still lacking much original content and Amazon only has a Chris Pine thriller, All of the Old Knives, on their release calendar for this May, but it is Netflix and Disney+ that have some interesting options.
Judd Apatow, the man behind comedy classics Knocked Up and The 40 Year-Old Virgin, has crafted a Lockdown-set comedy film, The Bubble, about a group of actors making a big budget CGI heavy at the start of the pandemic. Karen Gillan and Keegan-Michael Key are part of the ensemble in The Bubble that looks to be a comedic highlight and we have Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers coming to Disney+ in May, which looks like a very meta film that feels like a combination of Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and Alvin and the Chipmunks, with some iconic Disney characters meeting the titular Rescue Rangers on a weird and wonderful live-action adventure.
For cinema-goers there are Blockbusters galore, especially in the run-up to Easter. A quick rundown of films coming out from now until the end of May includes; Morbius, The Lost City, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, The Northman, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Downton Abbey: A New Era and Top Gun: Maverick. That’s a lot of films!
The highlights of that list include the sequel to Doctor Strange which promises to be as huge and epic as an Avengers film with Benedict Cumberbatch’s titular character meeting a plethora of characters from the Multiverse, including Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, making this film a must-watch for Marvel fans, as well as vampire-action film Morbius with Jared Leto’s anti-hero making his big screen debut. Harry Potter fans can also rejoice with the third film in the Fantastic Beasts series promising to up the action and set events into motion that will result in an epic showdown between Jude Law’s Dumbledore and Mads Mikkelsen’s Grindelwald.
Of course I’ve not mentioned some smaller independent films such as Alex Garland’s Man, Benedetta and True Things. There is something for everyone and with things back to “normal” after the past few crazy years we actually have a big season of movies to look forward to. So yes, we can enjoy the sunshine but don’t forget the cinemas are always open with films of all sizes for families, couples or just for yourself if you so please.
Thanks for reading today’s blog!
