A Look into “The Girl in the Café” - Part 1

So last month I officially released The Girl in the Café into the wilds of the Internet...well, mainly YouTube. It’s been getting a lot of great feedback! So for my next few blogs I thought I’d better use my current film knowledge and go into a bit more detail over a few of my favourite shots from the film.

 Cathy, Ruby and Piper

This shot is very early in the film and I wanted a shot which had the three main characters together and I wanted it to pop out over the screen. Having a red background helped contrast the colours in the shot. I got the cast to wear clothes which would fit the colour scheme of the café, which is why the colour is evenly balanced in the shot. While developing the story I originally had two more people in this scene who were both friends with Cathy. If I did have more people then I would’ve made a more technical dolly shot, but with a reduced number of characters in the scene I decided a static medium shot was best.

This shot was filmed quite later on in the filming process when I was using minimal extras. My good friend Owen Brooks offered to help me in any way he could with the filming of The Girl in the Café. It’s only a small role but I asked him if he fancied being a barista for a scene and he jumped at the part. The beginning of the scene has the café in darkness which leads on from the previous scene. I thought this transition would help ease the audience into the next scene rather quickly, and as I was also trying to keep the story at a steady pace I only needed certain shots, and I like this shot for that reason. Luckily, it was a simple shot to do, at a decent angle in the room to cover the whole café.

They’re the only shots being discussed today, but stay tuned to next week’s blog where I will discuss a few more. If you enjoyed learning more about the making of my films then please check out our website for more details.

Thank you for reading today’s blog!
