Film Review: Deadpool & Wolverine

Bye, bye, bye, as the lyrics go for NSYNC and thanks to Deadpool & Wolverine those lyrics are ingrained in audiences minds worldwide. It is very relevant for the film to start off with this classic tune as the last time we saw Deadpool and Wolverine we more or less were saying goodbye to them. 20th Century Fox, now rebranded as 20th Century Studios, has been absorbed into the Disney corporation and as a result all of these licensed Marvel characters are back where they belong. Gone are the days where the X-Men couldn’t battle the Avengers and now thanks to the acquisition anything and everything is possible, and that is certainly the ethos that Deadpool & Wolverine delivers.

I will not go into spoiler territory but there is a lot to cover in this Multiversal odyssey. Deadpool, played again by Ryan Reynolds, is living a normal life after saving his friends and family from death in the last film. He is pulled into a bureaucractic world beyond time called the Time Variance Authority, aka. the TVA, and it is here where Deadpool crashes from the old universe of 20th Century Fox characters and into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This concept is a brilliant way to bring this iconic superhero to the already established universe. He is soon on an adventure to find a different version of Wolverine from a different universe and together they fight against the TVA. Hugh Jackman has been playing this character for a very long time now but somehow he finds a fresh and new way of bringing this character to life in a very comic accurate way.

Deadpool & Wolverine works so well thanks to the chemistry between Reynolds and Jackman. Both of these characters bicker, joke and entertain each other throughout the film while poking fun at audiences and studios alike, because those who remember Deadpool will understand how self-aware and fourth wall breaking the character is. This just adds to the humour and filmmaker Shawn Levy who has worked with Reynolds before knows how to let the actor bring Deadpool to life for a more modern audience. Luckily the studio and filmmaking team have honoured the tone of the previous films and as a result we have a more mature and adult superhero entering the MCU. This gives hope to more stories such as this one with other characters similar to that off Deadpool and Wolverine.

The thing a lot of people were expecting from this film is the scope of the story and the multitude of surprises and cameos that were surely expected. It was a shock to myself to learn most of the cameos and surprises play a more supporting role than a diminishing role, which led to some truly unforgettable scenes and shots from the film. Every hero needs a villain and this time we have Emma Corrin as the mysterious Cassandra Nova, who has a connection to a certain member of the X-Men. Cassandra Nova is a formidable foe and is the perfect yang to Deadpool’s ying. The two are just as bad as each other in terms of profanity and violence. Seeing these two actors spar off each other is just another highlight inside a film full of other highlights. The overall experience is a fun-filled, fan centric story that honours the characters and moves the interconnected story of the MCU further forward into uncharted tales yet to come.

Final Verdict:

Deadpool & Wolverine sees the Marvel Cinematic Universe enter new territory. More new rules are set in play, and more adventures are certainly teased but this film reminds us that all audiences want is to have some fun. The humour of the previous films are back and thanks to the Disney acquisition of 20th Century Fox we get to see Deadpool take on more formidable foes and more jokes towards the House of Mouse. Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman remind us why we love these characters to begin with by bringing a fresh spin on these legendary superheroes. All the surprises and twists in the story feel rewarding and memorable and you will be left wanting more by the time the post-credits scene rolls.
