Marvel Studios is arguably the biggest movie studio in the world right now. This juggernaut of a studio has crafted some of the biggest films in recent years, from Avengers: Infinity Way to Black Panther to the more recent Spider-Man: No Way Home. Each film made by Marvel feels like an event, an event that has to be experienced on the big screen. So it’s weird to think that at the very beginning of their adventure to create a Cinematic Universe, it was all one big fat risk!
Back in 2008 we were introduced to Iron Man and re-introduced to The Incredible Hulk. Iron Man was the bedrock for the foundation of what would come after, and The Incredible Hulk attempted to revive the Hulk character. Both films weren’t interconnected unless you see those post-credits scenes. These were the days before post-credits scenes really took off. So seeing Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury telling Tony Stark about the Avengers Initiative was really a goosebump-inducing moment for comic book fans. The only problem was would non-comic book fans enjoy this foreboding as much as everyone else?
You don’t need me to tell you what happened after. Some amazing casting choices for Captain America and Thor followed and soon enough the Avengers was in the mainstream, in the public zeitgeist, and changed the culture of Hollywood as we know it! Since then we’ve had some obscure superheroes join them on the big screen that including the Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain Marvel, Shang-Chi, and the Eternals. Bringing these characters to life has all been risky endeavor and luckily it has paid off.
Unfortunately, the pandemic put a big massive pause on a lot of productions across the world which included the MCU. Luckily there was a silver lining as Disney+ had not long launched around the world and production was underway on some follow-up event shows that took place in the MCU which included WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Hawkeye as well as many others. The interconnectedness of the MCU has now grown to an unprecedented level. The days of Thanos and the Infinity Stones are over and we’re now in the Multiverse!
Spider-Man: No Way Home did the impossible by bringing together three different Spider-Man from three different generations with Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire returning to the spandex in one of the biggest films of all time! This year sees Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness with a glimpse of Patrick Stewarts’s return as Professor X from the X-Men movies teased in the latest trailer. Not only that but we have a tonne of new heroes joining the universe soon too with She-Hulk, Moon Knight, and Ms. Marvel all joining the pantheon in the coming months.
The future is bright for Marvel Studios. As mentioned before we have come a long way since Hawkeye aimed his bow at Thor and when Captain America met Iron Man’s father. With more adventures promised for Thor, Ant-Man, and the Guardians of the Galaxy, each coming future film will be an event, and knowing Marvel they will continue to change the game and reinvent the genre for many more years to come.
