Halloween is slowly creeping up on us which means it is time to dust off those cobwebs on those DVDs and time to move the sofa’s forward to prepare for those scary movies that are sure to dominate our small screens this coming week. Thinking of what film to watch is a tough decision though, especially with the sheer amount of content that has graced our screens this year, both big and small screens, so I thought about making a blog post detailing the best horror films that have appeared on the film calendar for the past year. I would highly recommend all of the following spooky movies for those who wish for a good scare this coming Halloween.
Before I delve into what has already come out I should note that this year there will be a few new spooky delights coming to the big screen this week, most notably a horror produced by Guillermo Del Toro with Antlers and the highly anticipated horror thriller from Edgar Wright with Last Night in Soho, both of which I cannot wait to see, especially the latter as I am a huge fan of Edgar Wright’s filmography. Alternatively, Halloween Kills is still playing in cinema’s and it is the perfect recipe for a classic Halloween treat with a few new tricks up its sleeve to surprise and scare you. So there’s a lot to enjoy this week!
Now earlier this year we were finally treated to the long-awaited sequel A Quiet Place: Part II, and the first film was such a huge hit that a sequel just had to be made! The sequel does a great job at building the world out from the isolated farm in the first film, and we are introduced to new dangers with new characters and new locations offering fresh new ideas of using silence as a tool for raising tension. A Quiet Place: Part II can be purchased digitally and physically if you wish to check it out for yourself.
James Wan is a horror filmmaker who gave us iconic franchises such as Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring. Despite not helming the third film in The Conjuring series, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, he did turn back to the horror genre for a brand new horror film with Malignant. Both of which are available digitally. Malignant is a brand-new original horror with a lot of twists and turns, and to tell you more would do the film a disservice because I went into the cinema not knowing much about this film and it surprised me, in a good way, with how creepy it was! Whereas I kind of knew what to expect with The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, and yet that also surprised me, putting a crime drama spin on the horror genre. Both films will have you sitting on the edge of your seat and you may want to keep the lights on after watching both films.
There are a few other horror movies that have surprised me this year and one of the highlights this year has to be the film Freaky, a film by the filmmaker behind the Happy Death Day films. There is a really fun premise behind Freaky, it’s basically Friday the 13th meets Freaky Friday, with a schoolgirl swapping bodies with a psychopath for a night and it is just as crazy as it sounds. Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton are perfectly cast and it has a lot of laughs as well as a lot of blood and it is available to purchase now digitally and physically.
Lastly, I could talk about films such as Candyman or Spiral: From the Book of the Saw, but it wouldn’t be Halloween without a good ‘ole fashioned Zombie film, and Army of the Dead is the film that will fill that void. Debuting on Netflix over the summer, Army of the Dead is Zack Snyder returning to his roots. His first film Dawn of the Dead was a great re-invention on the genre, and with his latest film, he has more fun with the genre as he dials up the action more so than any of his other films. It’s perfect for Halloween viewing.
We have been truly spoilt as horror-movie fans this year, with a wealth of content coming from some fantastic filmmakers. Regardless of what you watch this Halloween, I hope you have a spooky night, and don’t forget to check out Footsteps either this coming Sunday (Halloween)!
Thanks for reading today’s blog!
