It has been a year since I released The Girl in the Café on YouTube. So to celebrate this anniversary I was thinking of a special way of saying thank you to everyone who has continually supported the film.
If you haven’t seen the film yet, this is your SPOILER warning!
During the film, Ashley is recounting her youthful love life, but using the fictitious name 'Cathy' instead of her own, meaning the story has some reliability concerns. That is not the point of her story though, it’s a truthful account of her feelings with her friends Ruby and Piper and how their relationships are intertwined.
Throughout the film, Ashley is writing a manuscript for a book. Here’s a fun fact, I actually wrote a twenty-page manuscript for the film with extra story details. The information inside the manuscript has not been made public before, so here is an excerpt from the beginning which I’m calling The Prequel to the Café.
Thank you again, everyone and I hope you enjoy this behind-the-scenes look at the story of The Girl in the Café…

Cathy’s world revolved around a Café. In fact, it was a small community-based Café which was situated roughly ten minutes away from her home. It was an ideal place to meet-up with friends and family, and enjoy a hot drink or two there as well. This small and friendly Café felt like Cathy’s second home.
Going to the Café was a major part of her daily routine. First, she would finish college for the day, which would be followed by a brief bus ride back to town. When she got into town she would unload her college stuff at home and then head down to the Café. Most of the time she was with one of her friends.
This story is based on a very special friendship with one of her friends. Someone whom she met at the start of college the previous year. They have known each other for around five months, but already they felt like great friends. Her name was Piper Brooke. The moment she saw Piper she fell in love with her, but unfortunately, she never had the courage to tell her how she truly felt. This was due to many obstacles in her way, such as other girls getting her attention and family life taking priority. Having a love life was hard for Cathy.
In fact, she has had very few girlfriends which she has dated. One of the most complicated relationships she has had was actually with another friend of hers, Ruby Lines. Ruby and Cathy have known each other since they were eight-years-old. Over the past ten years, they have dated on and off. The chemistry between them was always there, but it always felt more lustful than lovable. When things between them got boring they decided to put their relationship “on hold”, which happened many times. However, through all of their indecisiveness, they learned to become great friends too, which they have been now for the last year, promising to stay friends and keeping their love lives separate.
